Hotel Chatham
Right by the beach in the main settlement of Waitangi, the Hotel is a big part of Chatham Island life. There's been a hotel on this site since the 1860s. Over the past 150-plus years there have been epic happenings like Te Kooti's 1868 raid before his escape but on most days, the Hotel has simply served as the touchstone for much of island life.
Human dynamo, Toni Croon is your host along with her team. Members of the Croon family have owned and operated the Hotel since the 1990s adding extra capacity and facilities to cater for ever-increasing visitors.
There's something special about being by the sea. The sweeping views of Waitangi Bay are spectacular from dawn to dusk. There's no better place to kick back and relax, whether it's in your room, the bar or restaurant. You'll enjoy becoming part of local life whatever you do.
We call Waitangi the CBD. There are definitely not too many high rises or traffic lights but there is the Waitangi Store – a general store. There's a petrol station, hardware store, a museum, hospital and Police station. The ANZ Bank and café have limited opening hours and down the road there's a craft store, featuring works by local artists and craftspeople. The Hotel has our own Souvenir and Gift shop opposite Reception in the Restaurant.
We have different properties to suit all budgets and visitors on holiday or on short or long term business. Most are located in or close to the main settlement of Waitangi – beachside home to Hotel Chatham.
While you can chill as little or as much as you like at the Hotel, most visitors can't wait to get out to experience this magical island. Hotel Chatham operates our own guided tours to all of the island's special places.
Take one of our island life tours to fit the number of days you're here. You'll get to see and experience the unmissable Chathams or you can select a special interest tour tailor-made for you or your group. Take a look at the Discover pages for more ideas and info.
